Suma Scaria is working as an Assistant Professor in Central
university of Karnataka, Gulbarga since July 2011. Prior to joining
in Central University of Karnataka, she was associated with Central
University of Kerala (October 2009 - July 2011) and Gujarat
Institute of Development Research (GIDR), Ahmedabad (September 2008
- October 2009). She finished her Ph D in 2008 with Department of
Economics, University of Hyderabad. Her thesis titled Developmental
Trajectories of a Kerala Village: Land, Education, Health and Women
in Wadakkancherry looks into the myriad processes through which
inequalities based on class, caste and gender are reproduced in the
context of a village in Kerala. At a broader level, the aim of such
a micro level study is to problematise the development process of
Kerala. This study which is interdisciplinary in nature makes use of
methods and insights from other branches of Social Sciences also.
She was awarded centrally administered Indian Council for Social
Science Research Doctoral Fellowship for pursing her doctoral studies.
Suma Scaria has published articles in refereed journals such as
Indian Journal of Labour Economics and Economic and Political
Weekly. Apart from this, she has published two GIDR working papers
based on her Ph D thesis. Some of her articles are also forthcoming
in reputed journals such as Indian Journal of Gender Studies. She
was associated with a research project on garment embellishment
industry funded by UNIFEM. She is having extensive field work
experience in the villages of Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra
Pradesh and is also proficient in handling secondary data sources.
Her teaching interest broadly lies in Development Economics, Macro
Economics and Mathematical Methods.
